Odissi

Solo

Tribhanga and the sculptural line. The furthest in temperament from Bharatanatyam's geometry, and the most useful corrective to it.

Odissi is built on tribhanga — the body bent at neck, torso and knee into a triple curve — and on the sculptural line that curve produces. The temple friezes of Konark and Puri are the reference the form keeps returning to.

It sits furthest in temperament from Bharatanatyam's geometry, which is exactly what makes it useful: a dancer who can hold both has to know where the line of each one actually is.
